The Site

Heaton Cooper Studio lies in the heart of Grasmere - a conservation area village in the centre of the Lake District National Park. In 2017 it was awarded a UNESCO Works Heritage Site for Cultural Landscape for it’s special identiy, inspiration and conservation.

The Brief

Mathilde’s is the successful cafe set up by Becky Heaton Cooper with a focus on Scandinavian food. This contemporary and light space celebrates the history of the Heaton Cooper family and their connection to Balestrand in Norway. The cafe compliments the gallery and shop which is filled with art, homewares from known Scandinavian brands and art supplies. As the business and client base has grown - they have outgrown the space. Changes are required in order to improve circulation flow, reduce waiting times at the servery and create a kitchen with back of house areas that work and have sufficient space. The space also has to work with the business plan going forward, looking at areas where revenue can be increased whilst remaining true to their loyal customer base. Retaining the relaxed, comfortable atmosphere in the space is key - this is what Mathilde’s customer base is drawn to - as proven in their feedback and reviews.
